Hawaii--11/07: Part 1  Part 2 >>

Dean found space available military flights from Jacksonville to San Diego the to Hawaii and finally to Guam.  We didn't make it to Guam because the flight was full with higher priority passengers, so we stayed in Hawaii for a week instead.

Here is the view of Honolulu and Waikiki Beach as we flew in to land.  Pearl Harbor is out of range to the left of this photo and Diamondhead is just out of range to the right.

The land of flowers and rainbows... We were happy to spend some time here.   We rented a car and roamed the island of Oahu.

 Rainbows are not rare here.

The SeaBreeze Restaurant overlooks the beach and the airport runway

We spent some time out on a point on Hickam AFB where we sat in the shade, enjoyed the breeze and watched the sailboat lessons.  We also enjoyed a couple of meals at the Sea Breeze Restaurant located on the point.

We heard that the surf was up, so we headed for the north shore where the beach is steep and the waves are legendary.  The waves were large, but not for this beach where they can get much bigger.

Spotted Moray eel pokes its head out to see what was going on.We signed up to go diving one day.  The first dive was a wreck/artificial reef and the second dive was among some lava tubes where there were lots of green sea turtles.

Soft coral growing on the wreck/artificial reef. Surgeon fish--it has sharp barbs near its tail.

We saw a spotted moray eel, many green sea turtles, some soft coral on the wreck, surgeon fish (so called because of the sharp spines near the tail), a needle fish, and sea urchins.

There were more corals and other growth on the wreck, but the second dive among the lava deposits provided a more interesting terrain.
