The Keys in October--10/07

This brain coral with its mesmerizing maze-like patterns twisting and turning over a large sphere. This specimen is about three feet in diameter. >>

We stopped in Lake Worth to celebrate Dori and Aaron's first anniversary.  Oct. 21: it hardly seems like a year since their wedding.   The next day we stopped at Key Largo for an afternoon dive at Pennecamp State Park.  The dive boat took us out to two different locations on French Reef.

<< The different types of coral make every dive at Pennecamp an interesting trip into a fantasy land of form and shape.  Just beautiful.

Brain Coral at Pennecamp

A bar Jack at Pennecamp.

A green moray eel replicates the patterns in the sandy bottom as it slides along.  >>

<< A Jack bar fish decorates the seascape with its rakish dark stripe along its back and down its lower tail fin.

A green moray eel slithers by.

A large winch from a wrecked boat gives this point on French Reef its name, Winch Hole.  Coral algae, sponges, and more use manmade structures as habitat, that in many places, especially where there are no reefs, people sink old ships to provide a substrate for an artificial reef.  >>

Blue sponges and various corals.

<< Three blue sponges and various types of coral provide a wonderful underwater arrangement.

After diving we camped at Pennecamp's campground for one night and then headed  down to Key West.  It's 100 miles from there and much of it is on a two lane road, but once on the Keys, we get into a slower, enjoy-the-scenery mode.

Our favorite campground at the Naval Base on KeyWest. When in Key West, we like staying in the campground at the Naval Base.  It's right on the bay and it's an easy bike ride into town.   We come down here a couple of times a year, but many of the other campers are here for the whole winter.

We set up a tarp to provide some shade. >>

When we went into town there were a couple of new sculptures that we liked near Mallory Square.  They were modeled after famous paintings.

Key West sunsets can be amazing.

And then there are the amazing sunsets.  How could you not love this place where every night there is a celebration of the setting sun??
