Key West--04/08: << Part 1  Part 2

Homeland Security gave us pause.  We could see that they don't negotiate with tourists, but we also noticed that they didn't spell "pretending" correctly either. Hmm...  Well at least it's good to know that we could have talked to the King if we needed to.

Homeland security doesn't negotiate with tourists.

There were lots of MGs in the parade.

There were many MGs in the parade, but the lead MGs, above)  were miffed when a plain old undecorated van cut into the parade in front of them--the nerve!  Horns were honked, but Elvis was there to calm their nerves.

<< This car was permanently decorated with the tropical scenery, but the Wild Bunch-No Bull car below left, had removable cow spots.

Below, a Star Wars Storm Trooper donned a straw hat and Hawaiian shirt for the occasion.

We've seen many of the sights on Key West, but we'd never been to the Butterfly Conservatory at southern end of Duval St.  We were pleasantly surprised--there were so many butterflies and moths and the gardens were just perfect for the situation.

Dean's head attracted a friend.

<< A butterfly stayed on Dean's head for several minutes--probably lapping up the salt.

 The turquoise iridescence is beautiful.

The butterflies were amazing, but there were also several turtles in the water feature and some seed or fruit-eating birds--finches and doves.

Cooter turtles enhabited the wter feature.

This bird was real. Amazing colors.

Giant swallowtails mating

This large moth was about 8-inches across.

A zebra long-wing, Florida's state butterfly

How appropriate--a butterfly bench.

A monarch

An orchid display added to the ambiance.

While we had a great time, the wind picked up on Friday which would have stirred the bottom up even more, so we weren't going to dive again.  And it was strong enough that it wasn't all that pleasant in the campground and even riding our bikes was a chore.  So we left on Saturday morning and missed the re-enactment of the bed race and more of the celebrations.  We probably won't make a special point to come again to this celebration.  It appears to be mostly for the locals.

We stopped to see Dori and Aaron on our way back home.  Nice to see that their landscaping that they did for the home tour is holding up well.
