Trek to retrieve our new RV and back -- 11/05

Wind generators on the Tehachapi Mountain rangePart 3-To the Grand Canyon:

We headed south in California down Rt. 99 to avoid the traffic on I-5.  We started west in Bakersville on I-40 toward Edwards AFB and the Mojave Dessert.

As we crossed the Tehachapi Mountains, we came across hundreds of wind generators.  Big ones and little ones all doing their small part to supply California's immense power needs as they turned in the wind.  Quite impressive really.Large and small wind generators on the Tehachapi Mountains

As we came into the flat Mojave Dessert area, we stopped at Edwards AFB for a break and to look around.  We saw the area where the shuttles land if they can't land in Florida because of weather.

Apparently, there's not much change in the weather here...

Edwards AFB landing fieldWe could see some standing water in the dry lake bed, but there's still plenty of room to maneuver, if a landing is called for.

After Edwards, we passed Boron, California and the 20-Mule Team Borax Museum and the boron mining operations.  We didn't stop this time around, though.

Ginny and Dean at the Crand Cayon's South Rim

We crossed the Colorado River south of Las Vegas and south of Lake Mead, as we entered Arizona.  We continued along I-40 and then headed north on Rt. 64 to the South Rim area of the Grand Canyon.

Yes, it was breath-taking.  Deeper and wider than you can imagine and the colors in the afternoon sun were spectacular, but there are many areas where you have to go by bus and there were too many people for us even in this off-season.

In the early 1900s, the park service built Tovar, a classic whole timber hotel, and the Hopi House so people coming to the park would have a place to stay and have something to do, as if looking at the amazing natural wonders were not enough.

Tovar, a Grand Hotel at the Grand Canyon. Hopi House at the South Rim section of the Grand Canyon

Dean at the South Rim

We took the standard and expected pictures and headed east and then north.

The viewing areas on the west side were deserted and the views were also fabulous.

Rock House: on south Rim. Probably Hermit's Point.
Brilliant colors agaisnt the pine tree.  All the people at the prime viewing area.

The Canyon is unbelievably deep!

Scraggly tree struggles in the harse environment
