Stavanger is our second and final stop in Norway. (It's a hard G sound in the name.) (Itinerary)

Sunrise calls to us through our porthole window. So we hurry up to the top decks, but it turns our that the sunrise lasted throughout our sail in.

Again we're sailing down a fairly long fjord to get to the city, but this time no other cruise ships are sailing in with us. Yay!

As we come to our dock, the early morning sun reflects a glass building there.

Also, as we pull into our dock, we see tents set up all around the waterfront.
On the other side of the harbor, above the gold terminal building, is the "old town."

The Petroleum Museum is near the dock. This city is quite industrial and is known as the oil capital of the North Atlantic.

It's Sunday morning and there are no other cruise ships in port, so we have the town to ourselves.

Graffiti art on purpose.

The cleaning crew is out and they are using leaf blowers to move the litter to the center of the walkways so the street sweeper can pick up everything.

A concert stage next to the dock is being dismantled. It must have been quite a party.

This cathedral was built in the 1100s and is the oldest in Norway.

This large church (see above photos, too.) also has an associated school.

In front of the above church is a park with a sizeable lake.  We expect that it's used for ice skating in colder weather.

We continue walking through the neighborhoods and find more churches and other spires.

This garage near the white church is built into and from boulders.

We like the paint jobs on these commercial vans, especially the painter without a head
and the caterer almost losing the plate.

The power distribution centers are interesting.

A participatory sculpture and one to honor the fishermen.

A monastery and a pair of fake, flat sneakers thrown over a wire.

The jellyfish in the harbor look a bit like poached eggs, only five times larger.

We head over to the old town, which called Gamle, the largest surviving wooden house settlement in Northern Europe.

Sculptures in the playground. The polish on the horse and wagon means that it's well used.

A few little gathering spaces dot this charming neighborhood.

This cement or stuccoed house with its huge smoke stack looks out of place amongst the charming wooden houses.

We thanked one of the resident gardeners for her work. Now we work our way back to the waterfront. The statue with his two cannons keeps watch at the bottom of the wooden village.

Some racers grab a bite on the deck of their high-tech sailboat.

Bikers pick their way along the dock in-between the people packing up the tents and all the people out for a stroll.

And so we bid Norway adieu with this last bit of ironic street art. Next stop is Amsterdam in the Netherlands, home to many of the ship's officers.

On to Amsterdam... >>
