Boca de Valeria, Brazil

There were parrots working around these clay cliffs.
This was just before we turned into the tributary where the village is.

Here is the village...

There was a dock for the tenders, but not much other infrastructure. We went through a gauntlet of cute but pushy children wanting to be our new best friends.

An upside down Amazon waterlily leaf shows its thorns and prominent veins.

A big catfish probably weighs as much as the girl sitting next to it.

People hired boats to go further up the small river that flows by the village.

Fishing nets hanging from a rafter. We headed through the village and out onto a trail into the rainforest.

Into a fenced-in area. We carefully closed the gate behind us.

The back gate used pieces of rubber, probably made from tires, as hinges.

A thin heliconia and a termite tunnel winding its way up a tree.

A Red-crested Woodpecker pair was working on a hole. They are the size of Pileated Woodpeckers in the US.

As we came back into the village, this kid had had enough of smiling to strangers. Also they'd set up an impromptu bar up on a raised platform. The beer had been chilled in ice in large coolers.

We took our beers and negotiated for a boat ride up the river and shared the boat with another woman from the ship.

Up close and personal with the Amazon waterlilies. The leaves can be three feet or more in diameter.

Our boat driver brought us to his village promising that we'd see parrots.

We followed him up the hill.

Looking back down from the hill...

There were no wild parrots, but it was interesting to see how people lived here.

From the boat... Saffron Finches and a Grest Egret.

We had our boat driver go back out so we could get a closer look at the parrots, but by this time, they were gone...

Islands of mud...

From this view of the village, you can see the new terminal buidling--sized perfectly for tenders.

Growing veggies in raised beds seems like a good idea here where flooding is common.

A Great Kiskadee.

Black-bellied Whistling ducks...

On to Manaus... >>
