Alter do Chou, Brazil

This was a tender port, but we didn't follow most of our fellow passengers, we turned right, and walked along the beach.

A bean tree with a lovely parrot...

A squash flower with a pollinator and fruit.

A Royal Tern with wind-ruffled feathers.

An Oriole Blackbird on a fence and a tribute on the beach.

Touching the mimosa to make it fold its leaves.

We'd reached the end of the beach.

A road and this thatched-roof house was on the far side of that high wall and the beach stopped here. There were several boats tied up here at the end of the road.

We asked this guy at the end of the beach if we could hire a boat. He called the owner of this house who called someone else.

It was an open-sided house with thatched roof, sand floors, and an outside shower, but it seemed well provisioned.

This was the owner of the house and he fixed us Cuban coffee--very strong and very sweet. He didn't ask if we wanted any, but this was just part of his hospitality to complete strangers. We had a nice conversation while we waited for the owner of one of the boats tied up in front of his house.

After 20 minutes or so, the boat owner came and the deal was made for a ride to the island across the bay. The boat sported a devilish-looking skull on its mast.

Gassing up...

On our way...

This flooded spit of land, filled with mostly abandoned structures, was part of the island.

One of our reasons for going to the island, was to climb the hill.

Leaf miners had been working on this plant.

The trail up was pretty steep in places.

Here you can see that spit of land with the flooded buildings.

A cross and a geodetic marker on the peak.

A little off the peak we found some shade for our lunch. We only saw one other person on this trail up the hill.

A giant swallowtail butterfly.

Termites were on this new deposit of feces and had already made a tunnel back to their nest.

We hired a rower to take us back to the mainland.

Some of those structures on the spit of land were still intact to some degree.

Back on land...

An interesting shelter for a phone booth...

We found a neighborhood market with local beer across the street from an athletic field.

The gate into the field had interesting street art. The words on the wall "Sobre o amor" translate to "about love."

We enjoyed the cold beers and the shade.

Not sure what the woven palm fronds were for...

We found some of our fellow passengers at this shore-side bar.

Looking back across to see the knob we'd climbed. It was time to head back to the ship. This was our last port in the Amazon River. What an interesting mix of ports and cultures.
