Cadiz, Spain (Itinerary)

We had a long day in Cadiz on the 2012 World Cruise and we spent most of our time at a beautiful white city atop a mountain. This time we spent our time exploring the city.

A suspension bridge under construction is silhouetted by the sunrise as we sail into Cadiz.

Only the top of an extensive monument is lighted by the early morning sun while its eternal flame burns below.

Flamenco dance and guitar is popular here.

We loved these door "hand"les.

After walking through the middle of the city, we headed toward the water and all roads lead to the water...

Guard towers cantilever from the waterfront walls.

Marble and stone checkerboard pattern dominates this plaza.

José Martí was a Cuban writer and hero who landed in Cadiz. This small monument under the giant banyan tree is in his honor.

Constitution Plaza

While there were certainly plenty of churches and chapels, some of them have been converted to other uses such as this college.

We loved all the colors in these peaks and domes. Some plazas had been planted with several types of plants in spaces between piles of rocks. Maybe it will look nice later in the season, but it seemed like a weird arrangement at this point.

A roman amphitheater is under significant renovation. We could only catch a glimpse though slats in the fence surrounding the site.

A long narrow alley led to this large church plaza.

And around the next corner a Sunday community yard (plaza?) sale...

Hey, who is that geezer couple?

Another hand handled door for this nicely tiled entry way.

We stopped for our lunch break in a sunny spot on a badly chipped bench. The parrots squawked overhead.

This church had memorial plaques on every exterior wall, but it has a fancy Baroque interior.

And one final tiled entryway before we headed to the ship. Not a particularly difficult day, but the continuous chilly wind made it slightly uncomfortable. Dean's Log: Cadiz.

We have a couple of sea days until we reach our final destination in the Azores.

On to Ponta Delgata... >>
